Types of Meditation

The different types of meditation aim to calm the mind and develop self awareness.

Generally, meditation can be classed into 2 broad categories, concentrative meditation and non-concentrative meditation.

Concentrative meditation is about maintaining your concentration during the meditation on a specific object, and when your mind starts to wander you bring your mind back to focus.

For transcendental meditation, this means that you bring your focus back to the mantra.

For breathing meditation. this means that you bring your focus back to the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

Non-concentrative meditation does not focus on a specific object but rather, you witness your thoughts, feelings and physical sensations that arise, in a non-judgmental way

In this way, you are aware of what you are experiencing in the present moment, without judgment. This type non-concentrative meditation is called mindfulness meditation..

Regardless of the type of meditation, according to Thorson’s Principles of Meditation, there are some common themes that run through all meditation exercises.

These include:

Attention: either to bring your attention to particular object of focus or the stream of thoughts and feelings that arise in your awareness.

Awareness: to develop your consciousness in a way that is less influenced by reactivity or judgment.

Understanding: To see things more deeply and clearly as they truly are.

Compassion: Being kind and welcoming to whatever arises in your experience.

Learning how to meditate can result in a number of physical and psychological meditation benefits, which can improve your health and increase your happiness and sense of peace.
