Is teeth grinding a sign of stress?

by John

Hi there,

Is teeth grinding a sign of daytime stress?

John.

Hi John,

That is a good question. Teeth grinding is also called "sleep bruxism".

Teeth grinding can lead to a number of conditions, such as sensitive teeth, increase the wear and tear and also increase the tenseness of muscles around the jaw - for more information see what is TMJ.

Anyway research that was just published in March 5 in the journal Head & Face Medicine, found that teeth grinding was a sign of stress.

Using 48 participants who suffered from 'sleep bruxism' were more likely suffer from daily stress and work stress and to use unhealthy coping strategies (such as escapism) when stressed.

All the best
Kell
