Deep breathing exercise before public speaking

by Gerry
(Canada)

I use this deep breathing exercise before public speaking or any time that I start to get nervous.

These steps are:

1. Set or stand in an upright position

2. I inhale through my nose and exhale through my mouth

3. I inhale slowly through my nose pushing my stomach out as I inhale. I hold my breath for 3 seconds

4. I slowly exhale through my mouth. I make sure that I can feel my stomach muscles tighten as I exhale.

5. I do this a few times before public speaking. I really helps me.

Gerry

Hi Gerry, Thanks for this deep breathing technique. I find that breathing exercises can be a simple and effective way to reduce stress quickly.

I write more about how to master public speaking anxiety and provide a number of breathing exercises that you can use to reduce overall stress.

All the best

Kell
