Breathing Meditation

Breathing meditation is a favorite of mine because it is a simple and effective stress buster that can be done on the plane, in the train, or anywhere you find a spare 10-15 minutes.

This meditation is used to still the mind and create a place of tranquility within. It does this by having you focus on your breathing.

Sit in a position that is comfortable for you. This could l cross-legged or any alternative position - the important point is to maintain a straight back.

Close your eyes and turn your attention to your breathing.

Inhaling and exhaling through the nostrils, become aware of the sensation as the air passes in and out of your nostrils.

It is this sensation that you want to focus your attention on.

You will find that your thoughts will become distracted. Rather than following the different thoughts that enter your mind, focus simply on the sensation of the air entering and leaving your body.

If you find that your thoughts become distracted, don't worry, just gently refocus your attention to the breath.

Over the course of this meditation you should find that your distracting thoughts subside and that you experience an inner peace. A sense of tranquility and quietness will wash over you.

As your mind stills, a feeling of wellbeing and happiness arises naturally from within.

It is this feeling of inner tranquility that helps you to cope with the stresses of everyday life.

By doing breathing meditation for 10-15 minutes a day you have a place that is free from stress. This habit provides a buffer against stress and problems of daily living, in addition to a number of other physical and psychological benefits.
